In this activity, students will measure the diameters and circumferences of circles and then calculate their ratios, discovering that the ratio between the circumference and diameter is always the same.

The constant ratio is named after the Greek letter π, or pi. For most students, pi is their first example of an irrational number, or a number that is expressed as a non-repeating decimal. The value of pi is 3.1415926…and the digits continue without end.

There are two activities in the Innovator Trading Card Collection:

Activity 1, Designing Innovator Trading Cards, focuses on the "theme of the week," learning about the innovators and their influence, and designing the innovator trading cards.

Lauren has more than 15 years in the educational field and is a doctoral candidate for Applied Learning Sciences at The University of Miami. A first-generation Latina and daughter of Cuban exiles, Lauren describes her approach to learning as "holistic, respectful of student cultures, and deeply rooted in resilience and empathy."
