In this activity, students determine similar and complementary interests and ideas among their peers. First, students fill out the included Interest Inventory handout. Then, they form small groups to discuss and compare what they wrote. Finally, students reconvene as a whole group for discussion.

Students in middle school may struggle to talk about the conflicts in their lives or about new emotions and experiences. In this activity, students role-play a variety of conversations and then evaluate and discuss their performances. (Note that the activity incorporates subjects such as honesty, friendship, academic achievement, and general health and wellness. However, it excludes controversial and emotionally sensitive subjects, such as sexuality and gender identity.)

Students work together to create a free speech informational brochure and then exercise their freedom of speech by articulating an opinion about the U.S. government.
