Teens Curate Teens: Creating the Open Call for Art

ArtsConnection

9 - 12

1 Hour 30 Minutes

Students work collaboratively to create a “Call for Art” for a upcoming art exhibition for teen artists that will alert artists to the opportunity and inspire them to engage. A flyer or poster is a great way to get the word out and can include visuals and text that will help artists understand the requirements and guidelines for possible inclusion in the exhibition. After deciding what criteria the curators will be using to judge the artworks for inclusion in the exhibition, they'll communicate those to the artists.

More than 85 percent of flowering plants require an insect for pollination, which allows for fruit and seed production. These fruits and seeds are a part of the diet of about 25 percent of birds and many mammals. Each year pollinators affect $577 billion in global crops, including $235 billion in the United States. Native bees pollinate an estimated 15 percent of U.S fruit, nut, vegetable, and field crops.

Planting a pollinator garden doesn’t have to be a big undertaking. Any size is excellent. From window and patio planters to home gardens, to pathways and roadsides, to acres of prairies and meadows - all can support pollinator populations. Besides the usual habitat elements, food, water, shelter, and a place to raise young, pollinator habitats have some specific qualities.
● Use plants that provide nectar and pollen sources;
● Be situated in sunny areas with windbreaks;
● Create “pollinator targets” of native and non-invasive plants;
● Establish continuous bloom throughout the growing season; and
● Eliminate or minimize the impact of pesticides.

North America is home to an incredibly diverse range of birds, from the majestic national icon—the bald eagle—to the remarkably resilient whooping crane. More than 800 bird species occur in the United States. Some live here year-round, others migrate here seasonally, and some stop in on their migratory routes to other countries. Of these birds, dozens are listed on the U.S. endangered species list, facing threats such as climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species.

Perhaps the easiest way to identify a bird is feathers—but they share several other characteristics. Birds are vertebrates, meaning they have backbones. All female birds lay eggs, which the young develop before hatching. These animals are warm-blooded and can regulate their body temperature. All birds have wings, but not all birds use them to fly. Penguins and ostriches, for example, do not fly.
