My Little Camp

National Wildlife Federation

K - 8

50 Minutes

Camping can be enjoyed year round. The National Wildlife Federation hosts the Great American Campout, a summer-long celebration exploring the wild outdoors through camping through October 31. Camping can happen just about anywhere — at a neighborhood, state or national park and even in your own backyard. This is a fun, easy way for family and friends to connect with nature and wildlife.

Today the average American child spends more than seven hours a day in front of an electronic screen, but as few as 30 minutes in unstructured outdoor play. Getting kids in nature is proven to reduce stress, improve sleep, and even lead to higher test scores. A child’s mind, body and spirit markedly improve in response to unstructured outdoor play.

MIND: Exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing ADHD symptoms.
BODY: Outdoor play increases fitness levels and builds active, healthy bodies, an important strategy in helping the one in three American kids who are obese, get fit.
SPIRIT: Nature makes children nicer, enhancing social interactions, value for community and close relationships.

A watershed is an area of land that drains all the streams, rainfall, and snowmelt to a common outlet such as the outflow of a reservoir, mouth of a bay, or ocean and consists of surface water, such as lakes, streams, reservoirs, and wetlands and all underlying groundwater. The word “watershed” is sometimes used interchangeably with drainage basin or catchment. Larger watersheds contain many smaller watersheds. Watersheds are critical because the water flowing over the land impacts habitat, and wildlife health supports various recreational activities and provides communities with drinking water.

Observing Biodiversity

National Wildlife Federation

3 - 8

Bio meaning life and diversity mean variety; biodiversity is the variety of life at every trophic level from microorganisms to the largest species of plants and animals. Biodiversity is a critical factor in a healthy environment, a part of the biosphere system. When parts of the system are not functioning well, the system starts to struggle, working inefficiently, or having the potential to break down completely.

An assessment of the best-known groups of U.S. plants and animals indicates that as many as one-third of America’s species are vulnerable, one in five is in danger and at high risk of extinction. It is critically important we provide children numerous opportunities to appreciate the natural world and teach them the skills required to be stewards of the land and its inhabitants.

Observing Clouds

Observing Clouds

National Wildlife Federation

K - 8

50 Minutes

Clouds are a familiar part of our human environment. Clouds affect our daily plans, and even children pay attention to them from a young age because of the many shapes they can take. Clouds are a key factor influencing local weather as well as the Earth’s climate system. They affect the temperature and energy balance of the Earth and play a significant role in controlling the planet’s long-term climate.

By observing clouds, we can get information about temperature, moisture, and wind conditions at different heights in the atmosphere. This information helps in predicting the weather. Observations of clouds also help us know how much sunlight reaches the ground and how easily heat from the ground and lower atmosphere can escape to space. Clouds play a central role in controlling the exchange of heat in the atmosphere, and changes in clouds over time can have significant climate impacts.

K - 8

Observation is the cornerstone of the inquiry process. It begins an investigation and continues throughout it. When making observations, children are learning to gather evidence, organize their ideas, and propose explanations about the world around them. By challenging children to use their five senses to make detailed observations, teachers are encouraging students to collect and organize information about natural phenomena that they naturally find compelling. ¹

While touch and taste help round out the five senses, it’s crucial children do not touch or taste anything that could cause harm, such as poison ivy or Virginia creeper berries.
