Overview

Making Comics has seven basic lessons for students to explore how comics are made while learning about story telling, character, setting, action and plot. Each lesson takes about an hour, and this course has 7-10 hours of activities that build as students complete their own comic characters, strips, and finally books from start to finish.

Making Comics Part 2: Splash Page

ACTIVITY

Students will look at the way characters and settings tell a visual story. They will have a chance to explore a Comic Book Splash Page and create their own.

Making Comics Part 3: Talking, Thinking, Dreaming

ACTIVITY

Talking, Thinking, and Dreaming are some of the ways that action unfolds in comics. Students have a chance to think about all the ways that language is used in comics, from lines that show action to the bubbles that show what characters are thinking and saying.

This is part 3 of 7 in a series. Provide context by first facilitating Making Comics Parts 1-2, and then afterward, Making Comics Parts 4-7.

Comic Panels show the story as it unfolds. Students pencil a story in a four-panel strip.

ACTIVITY

Students pencil a rough storyboard for a full-page comic with panel variation. Students have a chance to think about how a page of comic book panels tells a story. They explore different kinds of action and how action can unfold in a story told in pictures.

In comics, there are often several artists who make one thing, a story writer, a penciler, an inker, and a colorist too! Each one does a part of the finished whole! Students look at their penciled stories and start to get them ready to ink!
