Prepare a few facts about China, such as these:

China is the most populated country in the world. It has over 1.3 billion people.
China has a communist government. It has been a communist nation since 1949.
The mountains of central China are the only place on Earth where you will find pandas in the wild.

Ask students what they know about China. Show the location of China on a map or globe, and share with them the facts from Preparation.
Tell students that today they will work in groups to do research on China. Then, they will plan a trip through the country.
Divide students into small groups. Have each group research 1 or 2 of the categories listed on the board. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major landmarks found in China? What makes these landmarks significant to the country?
- What are some large cities in China? How are they important to the country? What major attractions are located there?
- Which provinces are more rural? Which have more cities?
- What kinds of wildlife live in different provinces?
- What kinds of regional food might you eat depending on which province you were in?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Have groups start planning their trip through China. Have each group identify several places they want to include in their trip, based on their research.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make a map of China. Then have them look up the location of each place where they will \"stop\" along the way and mark it on the map. Then have them briefly describe and illustrate what they would do there, such as visiting a landmark, observing wildlife, etc. Explain that their route can go in any direction they choose and be as long as they wish.
Have students write up an itinerary of their trip that provides more details about each stop, such as the city's/province's name, geographical features they will travel over or through, and attractions they will visit.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have groups present their maps and itineraries and compare how their trips varied. Ask students to discuss why they chose particular locations to \"visit,\" and encourage them to say what they liked about or learned from each group's work.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- Do you think China would be an interesting place to live, visit, or go to college? Why?
- If you could visit China, what is the first thing you would want to do or see? Why?
- How is China different from the United States or the state where you live?

Have each small group research a different city or province and then construct a whole-group map and itinerary.
