Famous People
History
Landmarks

Prepare a few facts about France, such as these:

Paris is famous for the Eiffel Tower.
France has both a president and a prime minister.
About 50% of France is farmland or countryside.

Ask students what they know about France. If they need prompting, explain that France is a country located in Western Europe, and share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that in this activity they will work in groups to research France and create trivia questions about the country. Then they will have a trivia contest with another group.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group 1 of the categories you wrote on the board. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events that happened in France's history? How did these events help make it into the country it is today?
- What are some large cities in France? How are they important to the country? What major attractions are located there?
- What lakes, rivers, and mountains are found in France? How are they important to the country?
- What are some positions in the federal and local governments? How does the French system of government work?
- What are some popular French foods?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Have students write at least 6 trivia questions, each with 1 correct answer and 3 incorrect answers. Encourage students to make their incorrect answers plausible, though not at all correct. Offer help as needed.
Reconvene as a whole group, and have groups take turns posing their trivia questions. The other groups should write their answers and hand them to you to be scored. Keep score on the board as you go, assigning 1 point for each correct answer.
Continue playing until each group has asked their questions; then announce the winning group.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
a. Do you think France would be an interesting place to live, visit, or go to college? Why?
b. If you could visit France, what is the first thing you would want to do or see? Why?c. How is France different from the United States or the state where you live?
