Ask students to define the word communication. Explain that communication is any sharing of information among people. For example, in the business world, communication is important within a company, between two companies that agree to work together, and between the company and the public.
Tell students that today, they will learn about careers in the field of communications. Explain that many colleges now offer degrees in communications.
On the board, list examples of careers for people who specialize in communications or earn a degree in this field.

Explain that people who work in the communications field usually have strong written and oral communication skills and presentation skills.
Divide students into groups of 4 or 5. Direct students’ attention to the list on the board. Have each group choose several of the career fields to investigate.
Tell each group to conduct research online to find out more about their chosen career fields, specific jobs in the field, skills needed to perform each job, and high school classes that might be useful to take now. Share the links provided in the Preparation section.
Circulate and answer any questions or provide help as needed. Encourage all group members to participate in conducting the research, organizing the information, and recording their findings. The group may want to use a chart to keep track of their findings and data.
Remind students that not all websites provide accurate information. They should confirm the information they find by consulting another source and by evaluating the reliability of the source.
Reconvene the whole group and invite each of the smaller groups to present their findings. Or review each of the communications careers listed in step 3, and invite volunteers to share the information they learned about it.
Discuss the activity with these questions:
- What careers were you most surprised to learn about? What did you learn?
- What skills are important in the field of communications? How can you acquire these skills?
- What is the most interesting career you learned about? How do you prepare for this career?
- What should you do in high school if you are interested in a career in communications?
