Write the following Canadian provinces and territories on the board:

Maritime Provinces (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick)
Quebec
Ontario
Manitoba
Saskatchewan
Alberta
British Columbia
Territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut)

Prepare a few facts about Canada, such as these:

Canada is the world’s second-largest country by area.
Most Canadians live near the southern border of the country, within 100 miles of the United States.
Canada has 2 official languages: English and French.

Ask students what they know about Canada. If they need prompting, share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that today they will be acting as the tourism bureau for Canada. They will work in groups to research the country and create a slideshow presentation to attract and educate visitors.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group at least one of the Canadian provinces or territories. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events that happened in the history of Canada? What sites in Canada celebrate or commemorate this history
- What are some large cities in Canada? What fun or interesting attractions do they offer?
- What recreational opportunities does Canada offer? Where can visitors participate in winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, and summer sports, such as kayaking and hiking?
Have students prepare slideshows focusing on their category. As students work, remind them to include text, headers, and pictures on their slides. Explain that headers help break up text into different subjects, which will make it easier for the rest of the group to understand each slideshow. Pictures can help illustrate points and add interest to the text.
Remind groups that they are acting as Canada’s tourism bureau, so their slideshow should focus on what is special, unique, or interesting for visitors to see and experience in their country.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have each group present its slideshow. Encourage students to say what they liked about or learned from each other’s presentations.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What would you want to do on a visit to Canada?
- How is Canada similar to its neighbor to the south, the United States? How are the two countries different?
- Consider this statement: “No single destination in Canada represents the entire country. For visitors to appreciate the country, they must travel across every province and into the northern territories.” Do you agree with this statement? Explain.
