Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Download and review the Spelling Web Handout, and print copies for all students or student pairs.

Find the words in the spelling web that are listed in step 3 of the activity.

Tell students that today they will be competing in a spelling game.
Distribute the first page of the handout to individual students or pairs. Tell students that the letter web shown in the handout can be used to spell a long list of words. They will compete to see who can find the most words.
Begin by outlining the rules.
- Start with any letter on the letter web.
- Spell words by moving along the lines from one letter to the next.
- Words must have at least 3 letters.
- You may return to a letter more than once (LAVA and SEAS both count), but you may not stand on a letter and count it twice (SEED and INNER do not count)
- Plurals and other words ending in S are allowed.
- Proper names are not allowed.
Ask students if they have any questions. Otherwise, have them begin finding words. They should record all words that they find in their notebook or on a sheet of paper.
Circulate among the groups and assist students as needed. For students who are succeeding at the puzzle, challenge them to find words of 6 letters or more. For students who are struggling, suggest they begin with a commonly used letter, such as S or D, and see what words they can find beginning with that letter. Then move to the next letter.
Call time when students appear to be finished finding words. Then have students tally their scores. They should award 1 point for each word in each letter, so 3-letter words are worth 3 points, 4-letter points are worth 4 points, and so on. Confirm the high score and then announce the official winner.
Here is an incomplete list of words that can be spelled in the web.
- 3-letter words: ADE, DAD, DEN, LAD, NUN, OVA, PIN, RED, SAD, SEA
- 4-letter words: DEAD, DEAL, EASE, NINE, READ, REAL, LADE, LAVA, OVAL, PINE, QUIP, SEAL, SEAS, VASE
- 5-letter words: DREAD, EASES, EQUIP, LASER, LAVAS, NINES, PINED, PINES, SALAD, SALVO, UNPIN, VASES
- 6-letter words: PINEAL, READER, REDEAL, REREAD, RESEAL, SALVOS, SEQUIN, EQUINE, UNEASE, UNREAD, UNREAL
- 7-letter words: DREADED, EQUINES, PREREAD, QUININE
- 8-letter words: SEQUINED, SEQUINES
To extend the activity, distribute the blank letter web on the second page of the handout. Have students write letters in the circles, with the goal of making an interesting spelling puzzle. Have them exchange puzzles with partners, and then find as many words as they can.
