Introductory Activity (10 minutes)
- Provide each youth with a blank piece of paper. Instruct them to outline a human body.
- Ask the youth to sketch a brain within the body outline. If needed, show them the Brain Diagram.
- Divide the youth into pairs. Ask each team to briefly explain how the brain works. Facilitate a brief discussion on how the brain makes decisions and processes information.
- Say, “Think of the human brain like a beehive. In the brain, we have different cells and regions all working together to make the body function. This is like a beehive where you have bees performing different coordinated actions that result in a functioning hive.”
A Day at the Hive (15 minutes)
- Distribute A Day at the Beehive cards. Give each youth one card until all cards have been distributed.
- Say, “Let’s see what the different roles are in the beehive and how they work together to make the hive function. Beehives are incredibly busy spaces. You’ll need to arrange your cards to show a sequence when the tasks happen in a certain order, as well as show how certain tasks take place simultaneously. Not all groups have all cards. So, arrange your cards and then merge your cards with another group’s cards.”
- Have the youth form small groups, using the clues on their cards to put together an image of a day in the life of a beehive.
- Once groups organize their cards, they should merge with another group, integrating them. Repeat until all cards are arranged.
- Check the youth’s work against the answer key. If any mistakes are made, ask questions to help youth identify the errors and make necessary corrections.
Create a Story (20 minutes)
- Explain to the youth that they will now create a visual representation of a day in the life of a beehive. They can choose to make a comic or a short skit.
- Give the youth time to plan their project. Encourage them to work in pairs or small groups.
- Allow the youth to work on their chosen project. Provide necessary materials like paper and art supplies as needed.
- Have each group present their project to the class.
- Peers should provide feedback using the TAG strategy.
Closing Activity (10 minutes)
- Tell the youth you will play a short video. They should determine why bees matter to humans and the Earth as they watch.
- Play the video \"Pollinators: Putting Food on the Table.\"
- After watching the video, ask:
- Give youth time to write a simile comparing the human brain to a beehive (a simile is a statement that compares two items and uses the words like or as in the statement).
