Write the following words on the board: deforestation, desertification. Ask students how the words might be related.
Explain that desertification (the process by which fertile land becomes desert) is often the result of deforestation (the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides forest).
Tell students that today they will be learning about the importance of preserving the world's forests and creating an infographic to explain a fact about deforestation.
Explain that preventing deforestation is 1 of a series of sustainable development goals set by the United Nations to help solve some of the world's problems. In 2015, 193 countries came up with 17 goals for the future. The goal for \"Life on Land\" reads \"Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss.\"
Display and read as a group the introductory information from the webpage about Sustainable Development Goal number 15: Life on Land (see link in Preparation). Make sure students understand what this goal involves and why it is important.
Ask students if they have ever seen an infographic and if so, where it was and what it showed. Discuss what makes an infographic (a visual image such as a chart or diagram used to represent information or data).
Have students form groups of 2 or 3. Tell them that they will be working together to create an infographic using any type of visual to represent the information.
Display the \"Life on Land\" infographic or have small groups navigate to it on a device (see Preparation; 2nd link). If students will be viewing on their own, write the URL on the board.
Display or have students navigate to the \"Facts and figures\" tab on the \"Life on Land\" webpage. Have each group select 1 of the bullet points for their infographic. (You may wish to monitor choices to ensure there is no repetition.)
Have groups use poster paper and any available art supplies to create an infographics based on the information in their bullet point.
Reconvene as a group and allow small groups to display and explain their completed infographics.
Have a group discussion about how students could start a service project using their infographics as a possible starting point. For example, they could:
- Display their infographics around the school to help encourage a letter-writing campaign to businesses that are involved in deforestation.
- Use their infographics as a part of advertisements for a fundraiser (coffee house, bake sale, carnival, etc.) to raise money to combat deforestation.
If time allows, lead a discussion about the activity:a. In what ways might deforestation affect your life? How does it affect life on Earth?b. Why is an infographic an effective way to communicate information? What kinds of information do you think an infographic can best show?
