Write the following sentence on the board: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. Ask students what they think the sentence means.
Tell students that today they will be learning about the importance of keeping the world's oceans clean and safe. They will create posters to \"advertise\" oceans to persuade others to conserve and sustainably use this important resource.
Explain that ocean conservation is 1 of a series of Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations to help solve some of the world's problems. Display and/or read aloud the introductory information from Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans. (See Preparation.)
Have students form pairs. Pass copies of the \"Life Below Water: Why It Matters\" PDF to each pair. Have pairs read the PDF and take notes or highlight key details that they could use to create a poster \"advertising\" the ocean.
Encourage pairs to include persuasive text and images for their posters, possibly including a slogan. Provide examples of slogans by showing students the advertisements at the Advertising Slogans website. (See Preparation.) Point out that catchy slogans are easy to remember and can help people change their behavior.
Distribute poster paper and art materials, and give students time to create their poster. Remind students that their poster should persuade others that the ocean should be protected. Prompt students to include the information they read about oceans in their posters, especially the many benefits of a healthy ocean: providing food, medicine, biofuels, beauty, recreation and tourist areas, etc.
Have students display their completed posters for the whole group and view other groups' posters. Ask students to comment on what elements of other posters they found interesting or persuasive.
Have a group discussion of how students could start a service project to help protect our oceans. Have students refer to the \"So what can we do?\" section of their printout to help generate ideas.
If time allows, lead a discussion about the activity. Ask:a. How is the ocean an important part of our lives?b. What persuasive words and ideas did you use in your posters?c. How could you use your posters as part of your service project?
