Introductory Activity (10 minutes)
- Show the video \"The Waggle Dance: Inside the Animal Mind.\"
- Ask:
- Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
- Have groups perform their dance for their peers while their peers guess.
What is an Infographic (10 minutes)
- Ask:
- Say, “Like bees, humans are very good at using body language to communicate our feelings and thoughts. In addition to body language, we also use visuals to help us communicate ideas to one another. One such visual is called an Infographic.”
- Handout the document named Infographics.
- Review page one as a class. Discuss the features of an infographic and examine the examples.
A Bee Infographic (30 minutes)
- Explain to the youth that they will now create their own infographics about bees.
- Point to the third page of the Infographics handout; it includes brainstorming prompts to help the youth design the infographic.
- Hand back the handout from the previous activity. Tell the youth that they can use the data from yesterday.
- Allow students to work individually or in pairs.
Closing Activity (10 minutes)
- Post the infographics around the room.
- Distribute Post-it notes.
- Tell the youth to examine each infographic. They should:
- Once they complete the Post-it Note they should place it on the infographic.
- Give the youth seven minutes to review as many infographics as possible.
- Use the remaining three minutes for youth to examine the Post-it Notes left.
- If time allows, ask the youth if they felt the feedback was accurate.
