Learn to build a canoe and test, modify, and improve the effectiveness of their designs.

For each group of students, prepare:

Popsicle sticks
Wooden spoons
Small balsa wood pieces,
Bendable wire (florist’s or craft wire)
String
Paper clips
Rubber
Bands
Toothpicks
Aluminum foil
Plastic wrap
Wooden dowels
Glue
Water in a large basin or sink
1 measuring cup or other pouring device

For the class, prepare:

Coins for the challenge of added weight onto the canoe
1 timer

Designate an area for students to test their canoes’ ability to float.

Prepare all materials in advance

To begin this activity, divide the class into groups of two or three students, providing a set of materials to each team and explaining that students will be creating a canoe that can float for at least 3 minutes using the materials provided. (Note: For older or advanced students, consider adding coins or other weight to the design challenge.) The canoe must be at least 8 inches in length.
Have students brainstorm ideas to develop a plan for their canoe. As a group, they must agree on the materials they will need, and write or draw their plan and present it to the teacher. Students can request additional quantities of materials (up to two sets of materials per team) and trade unlimited quantities with other teams to assemble their ideal parts list.
Next, students execute their plans. They may need to rethink their designs, request materials, trade with other teams, or start over.
Once all teams have a finished canoe, they will test their canoes to see if any can float for three minutes. (If they succeed, try the same challenge but with weight added on, like coins. If they failed, have groups brainstorm ways to fix their design).
Give groups 15 min to problem-solve their design and improve their results.
Once groups are prepared for another test, have them test their canoes for a second time.
To end this activity, facilitate a group discussion and discuss with students what worked when making their canoes and what did not work. Ask students what they would have done differently if given another chance to further improve their designs.
