Introductory Activity (15 minutes):
- Call students’ attention to the questions on the board.
- Ask a student to read them aloud and remind them that they are seeking the scientific community’s answers to the questions.
- Hand out Post-it Notes, four to each student and students’ previously answered Climate Change questions. Have students write, or draw, short response to each question.
- After all students have posted their responses, arrange the Post-it Notes so they form a lose bar chart. This will allow students to see, collectively, which questions they can answer like a scientist.
- Congratulate students on researching the correct answers to the first two questions.
- Explain that they will continue pursuing answers, with today focusing on the question, “Is this Climate Change different from previous?”
A History of Climate Change (20 minutes):
- Have students move themselves in # groups.
- Provide each group with the article, Earth’s Changing Climate, the Famous Hockey Stick Chart, and highlighters.
- Ask students to read the article, highlighting:
- Give students 7-10 minutes of work time.
- Prompt students to share what they noticed about Earth’s Climate History. Then, prompt students to share what they wonder.
- Explain to students that you will be showing a video. Students should listen for the major Earth climates and what causes a change between those climates. As soon as they hear one, they should call it out.
- Have a student act as a scribe, listing the climates and the change reasons as they are called out.
- Discuss whether these changes could impact Earth today.
- Ask students if they noticed anything about the way the narrator referenced time?
Time Change (15 minutes):
- In their groups, have students share a 30-second video, a 1-hour tv show and a 3-hour movie they like.
- Hand out three notecards and pencils to each group.
- Each group should select a video, a tv show, and a movie that represents three categories of time…quick, short, and long.
- Gather four volunteers. Give each a card and position them around the room.
- Tell students that the volunteers each represent a climate period in Earth’s history. They are to go around to each volunteer, listening to a bit about the climate.
- As a group they should then decide whether the climate period existed the length of a video, tv show, or movie. One answer will be duplicated.
- Students should write the name of climate period on the selected card.
- After all groups have made their determinations, ask them to share out their answers.
- Discuss similarities and differences between group choices.
Is this Climate Change different from previous? (8 minutes):
- Distribute small squares of paper and four colored pencils.
- Have students draw a circle on the square.
- Students should create a pie chart that represents the four climate periods. Each climate period should have a pie piece that is proportional to how long it lasted.
- Prompt students to share their pie chart with peers and observe the similarities.
Closing Activity (2 minutes):
- Through a thumbs up or down, ask students if this Climate Change is different than previous.
- Ask three or four volunteers to share how it is different.
