Use the scientific method to hypothesize, test, and reflect on the design and functionality of paper parachutes they create.

For each student, prepare:

24 binder clips (small)
String
Pack of large coffee filters
Stopwatch

For the class, prepare:

To begin, hand students one coffee filter, one binder clip, and four long pieces of string.
Instruct them to create parachutes by cutting holes along the perimeter of their coffee filter, passing the string through the holes in the filter, and then tying the other end of the string to the binder clip.
Using the scientific method, instruct students to hypothesize about their parachutes and how long it will take them to reach the ground after being dropped from a high altitude.
Climb to the altitude you've chosen (can stand on chairs in the room, or head to an outdoor area or stairwell), and time as they drop their parachutes individually or as a group.
After the last parachute has dropped, lead a discussion with students about their parachutes: what worked and what didn't, whether their hypotheses were correct, and what they can do in future tasks to be more effective. If time allows, you can have them redesign their parachutes after having reviewed potential improvements, and then rerun the experiment.
