Map of the United States during the Civil War (or a modern map)

Read and familiarize yourself with the activity.

Gather resources students can use to conduct their research.

Write some research ideas on the board. For example:

Battles: Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Bull Run, Vicksburg, Sherman’s March to the Sea
People: Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson
Stories: life as a soldier, African Americans in the war, women in the war, medicine/nursing, the Underground Railroad, Harper’s Ferry, union blockade, submarines, the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln’s assassination

What Caused the American Civil War?

Tell students that today they will work in teams to learn about the Civil War. Each team will research a specific topic related to the war, such as the battles, notable people, or personal stories.
Have students divide into small teams according to the topic that interests them.
Show students the resources you have gathered.
Have each team member look quickly through the available resources to select a specific battle, person, or story to focus on.
Instruct each team member to create a short speech about their topic. Notes for the speech can be an outline or a formal script.
Have each team member share their findings with the rest of their team. Then have the team work together to arrange the scripts in a logical order and discuss how they will take turns presenting their findings. Explain that they will be sharing their findings with the whole group as if they were television reporters cast into the past to report the story.
Place the map of the United States on the floor. Reconvene the whole group around the map. Ask students to imagine that the map were larger and covered the entire floor. Point out where north and south are in the room and on the map.
Ask each student to stand in the room where the page they wrote mostly takes place. Explain that during the Civil War, newspaper reporting greatly increased. Newspapers sent reporters to the battlefields to report back with information about the war.
Have teams take turns sharing with the whole group what they learned about the Civil War. Remind them to speak as if they were television reporters announcing the news as it happened.
When students have finished, discuss the following questions:
- What were the main grievances between the North and the South?
- What most surprised you about the information you learned today?
- How did the United States change as a result of the Civil War?
(Optional) After the presentations, place all of the students’ notes together to form a group booklet.
