Ask students to name various college majors. If necessary, prompt students with well-known majors, such as education, chemistry, journalism, and psychology. Write them on the board.
Explain that each college major has its own unique curriculum, and different majors help students develop different skill sets. These classes and skills will eventually lead to certain types of careers. For example, a psychology major learns how to help people deal with anxiety; this person might become a counselor or therapist. Psychology majors also learn about cognition and learning, so some have the opportunity to work in human resources. However, someone with a degree in chemistry would need additional training to do those jobs.
Tell students that in this activity, they will consider how the skills and knowledge learned in specific college majors relate to careers.
Instruct students to focus on a career they are considering and write down some skills they think are necessary for this career. Tell students to also write down what types of college majors and classes they think they will need to pursue that career.
Have students form pairs. Instruct them to switch papers with their partner. Tell them that their research will focus on their partner’s major.
Ask students to begin with The Princeton Review website to research what classes and skill sets are needed for their partner’s major. Encourage students to also search other reputable sources, such as college websites, to learn more about a possible curriculum for that major. As they find new information, have students take notes on their partner’s paper indicating whether their partner’s assumptions about skill sets and classes are correct.
Instruct students to use the other websites on the board to learn which majors are associated with various careers. Tell students to note whether their partner made the correct connections between skill sets/classes and careers. If the partner’s potential career choice requires something other than what they assumed, have students add new skill sets and classes as needed.
Make sure students have enough time to research and record their findings. Circulate among students as they work, providing suggestions about how to connect the information they have discovered about skill sets and college coursework with career paths.
Have students return the papers to their partners and discuss their findings.
Reconvene as a whole group. To wrap up, ask students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What did you learn about how skill sets vary and/or overlap from 1 career to another?
- Were you surprised that particular majors led to particular jobs? Which connections were surprising?
- Did this activity help guide you toward a specific college major? Why or why not?
- Did this activity help broaden or narrow your potential career paths? How did it do that?
