Display a map of the United States. Ask: “If you could visit any city in the country, where would you go? Why?” Invite volunteers to share their ideas and point out their locations on the map.
Tell students that today they will get to explore a major U.S. city virtually. Then, explain that they will use what they learn to prepare a virtual tour of that city.
Display the web links and articles on the board, or send the list electronically to students. Tell them this is a suggested list of travel websites to help them get started. Explain that they will need to find information on their assigned city. Show them how to enter cities into the search fields and how to navigate the maps.
Organize students into small groups. Direct them to browse the maps and guidebooks, as well as 1 or more of the sample city slideshows.
Then, ask each group to select a city to explore. You may wish to list examples of potential cities (e.g., Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York, Seattle).
Instruct students to begin exploring their cities. They should:
- Find and save 1 map of the city.
- Identify 3-5 cultural, historical, or natural landmarks.
- Learn ways to get around the city.
- Identify 3-5 key facts, such as relative location in the United States, founding date, seasonal weather, and population.
- Identify 3-5 fun facts, such as popular sports teams or music groups that call the city home.
- Find and save at least 3 images to illustrate these details.
Next, have each pair make a slideshow to create a virtual tour of their city. Tell them to include the information they researched in step 6, along with any other information they’d like to share about the city.
If time permits, have small groups “city hop” and view at least 2 other presentations.

Optional Extension 1:
Challenge students to plan an itinerary for a 2-day trip to visit their city. Have them identify how they would get there when they would go, where they would stay, and 3-5 places they would visit. Ask them to consider whether they would explore the city on foot, in a private car, or using public transportation.

Optional Extension 2:
Give students a budget of $500 for their trips. Have them readjust their planned itineraries based on what they can afford within that budget. Their plans should include the expected cost of transportation, lodging, admissions fees, and food during their travels. (Advise students that they might be able to save money if they team up to travel and lodge together!
