Engage - 5 minutes
- Distribute a quarter sheet of paper to each student.
- Instruct students to draw who they’d be if they were a superhero. They should consider their:
- Prompt students to develop their superhero.
Explore I - 10 minutes
- Direct students into groups.
- Distribute Dizzy and Chano – one copy per group.
- Provide students with 3-4 minutes to discuss what they think is happening in the comic story.
- Then, invite groups to share out loud.
- Say, “Did you know there’s a secret code in comic books? There are little clues that help us understand the story.”
- Distribute Key to Comics, one per group.
- Using the key,
- After 3-4 minutes, prompt students to share what they’ve uncovered. [a: Dizzy and Chano each played their own music. When they played at each other, it did not work. When they fused their sounds together, they made a new, amazing sound.]
Extend I - 40 minutes
- Explain that students will practice two crucial elements of jazz:
- Have students pick two character slips from the bucket.
- Provide the comic story parameters. Students must:
- Distribute a full sheet of blank paper to each student.
- Encourage students to lightly sketch their comic story first, revising as they go.
- Finalize the comic story by outlining all drawings with a black marker.
Reflect - 5 minutes
- Invite students to swap their comic story with a peer.
- The peers should use the Key Code to explain the comic story to the partner who created it.
- Have the partner (the comic story writer) confirm their peers' deciphering.
Outcomes to look for:
- Students can apply the code to visually depict meaning behind a comic story.
