Equation Assembly Line
Overview
Beginning algebra students often struggle with using variables to represent unknown or unspecified quantities. They also may feel more confident solving a problem or equation that uses relatively simple numbers, such as 2x – 7 = 3, compared to less familiar numbers, such as 14x – 75 = 23. In this activity, students will apply an assembly-line model to generate and solve a variety of equations of the form ax + b = c or ax – b = c, in which a, b, and c represent positive integers. The end product will be flash cards or note cards for modeling the solution for this type of equation.
