Ask students to name some skills they are learning by being part of a team or club or simply as part of their normal school day. If necessary, prompt students with the examples you've prepared. Write them on the board.
Tell students that in this activity, they will consider how their own skillset and personal attributes are strongly linked to particular college majors.
Have students draw 2 columns on a piece of paper—one side for skills, the other for personal attributes. Instruct students to write 3-5 entries in each column.
After students have filled in each column, have them use the websites on the board (as well as other reputable sources, such as college websites) to match their skills and attributes to a variety of college majors. Explain that they should search for both majors they think might be appropriate for them and ones they might not have previously considered. Tell students to take notes about connections they make—whether the results are expected or surprising—to share with the group.
Allow students time to research and record their findings. Circulate among students as they conduct their research, providing suggestions about how to connect their own information with college majors.
Once students have completed their research, have them write 1 or 2 paragraphs summing up how their current skills and traits could help them successfully complete 1 or more majors.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have students name a few skills and attributes they listed for themselves, as well as which majors they seemed strongly connected to. Encourage the group to contribute other ideas they may have developed through their own research.
To wrap up, ask students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What did you learn about yourself by writing down your skills and attributes?
- What did you learn about the connection between your skills and attributes and various college majors?
- Did your research confirm what you thought would be an appropriate college major, or were you surprised by your findings? How so?
- How can matching your skills and personal traits to a major help you succeed in college?
