Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Select, obtain, and preview an appropriate picture book to read aloud from your school library or local resource center.

Gather all other necessary materials.

Ask: \"Who is Abraham Lincoln?\" Invite volunteers to share their ideas.
Explain that Abraham Lincoln was a president of the United States who lived a long time ago. Say: \"But before he was president, he was a kid like you!\"
Tell children that today they’re going to get to know Abraham Lincoln as a child and as an adult. Then, they’re going to have fun acting like Lincoln.
Read the picture book aloud. Pause to identify locations described in the book on the map. After each 2-page spread, ask children questions to check understanding such as:
- What did Lincoln do on this page?
- What did you learn about Lincoln here?
- Why was this person important to Lincoln?
After reading, organize children into small teams. Ask them to write down something important they remember about Lincoln from the book. Call on each team to share their detail.
Remind children that an adjective is a word that describes something or someone. List examples, such as short, tall, nice, mean, funny, brave, and curious. Have each team write 1 or 2 adjectives to describe Lincoln.
Challenge each team to prepare a role-play about Lincoln. Students may describe themselves in the first person as Lincoln with 1 of the adjectives and tell about something that Lincoln experienced. For example: \"I was always very curious. I spent a lot of time reading.\"
Encourage teams to have fun. Have volunteers perform their role-play.
If time permits, close the activity with a discussion:
- What else do you want to know about Lincoln?
- Do you think Lincoln is a good role model? Why or why not?

Optional extensions:

Assign older children a poem to read and/or memorize from The Superlative A. Lincoln: Poems About Our 16th President by Eileen R. Meyer. Have children take turns reading aloud. Encourage them to use costumes or props, to have fun, and to be expressive. Ask them to finish by explaining what the poem they read means to them.
Watch all or part of the video Illinois Adventure #1401 \"Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site\" and/or Lincoln Home National Historic Site Tour (HD). (See links below.) Tell children to draw a picture of a scene from 1 of the homes and to write 1-5 details that they noticed about the home. Discuss what they think it was like to live there. Ask: \"What does Lincoln’s home tell you about him?\"
Ask older children to read sections of text from an early reader or chapter book about Abraham Lincoln. Have them write down key events described in their text. Arrange the events in an illustrated class timeline about Lincoln’s life. (Adapt this activity to younger children by identifying details from the picture book.) Suggested nonfiction titles:
