Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Gather a variety of picture books about the American Revolution (see Materials). Leave the books in a central place so students can take and return them by themselves.

Gather all other needed materials

Ask students if they know what the word revolution means. If they need prompting, tell them that, in this case, revolution means to change the way a country is ruled by revolting against and changing its government. Explain that in the late 1700s, before the United States was a country, Great Britain ruled the people who lived here. Because many people did not like the way the British government treated Americans, there was a war to change the government and create the United States. That war is now called the American Revolution or the Revolutionary War.
Tell students that, today, they will have a chance to work in groups to make their own book about the American Revolution.
Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Give students time to look through the books you brought on the American Revolution to learn more about it, including the causes, people involved, alliances, battles, result, and more. Provide questions like these to guide students in their research:
- What caused the American Revolution? How were the colonists being treated by Great Britain’s government?
- What is “taxation without representation”?
- Who was King George III? How was he important to the American Revolution?
- How was George Washington important to the American Revolution?
- What were some major battles during the American Revolution? Who won them?
- Which countries were allies (worked together to fight)? How did they work together?
- What was the main result of the American Revolution? Why is this result still important today?
Have each group plan their book about the American Revolution. Prompt students with questions, such as these:
- What information will you include in your book?
- What will the pictures show?
- How many pages will you need?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make the pages for their own book about the American Revolution. They may draw illustrations or glue small pieces of paper to the pages to create collages. Remind students to use both words and pictures to show what they learned about the American Revolution. Suggest making 1–2 pages for each category they want to include and grouping those pages together. For example, 2 pages about important people, followed by 2 pages about battles, etc.
Once the pages are done, have students use construction paper to make the cover. Ask groups to write a title for their book, and to write the group members’ names as authors. Allow them to add pictures to the cover as well, if they choose.
Help each group bind their book by stapling the pages together.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have students pass around the books their group made so everyone can look at them. Encourage students to say what they like about or learned from other groups’ books.
To wrap up, discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:a. What did your group include in your book about the American Revolution? Why did you decide to include those things?b. How are the other groups’ books different? How are they the same?c. How would our lives be different today if the colonists had not fought the British?d. How do we celebrate our independence today?
