Ask students if they know anyone who has a chronic disease or if they can think of a health issue in their community.
Explain that today they will learn about the World Health Organization (WHO). The organization now draws from almost 200 member states. It has been helping maintain world health since 1948.
Point out to students that the WHO is an abbreviation for the World Health Organization. Continue by explaining that this group is part of the United Nations (UN). If students are not familiar with the UN, tell them that it formed as a peacekeeping group in 1945 after World War II ended because many countries did not want to go to war again. The UN has grown from 51 member countries when it was founded to almost 200 member countries today.
Write the term \"World Health Organization\" on the board and circle it. Write \"International Group\" and \"Founded in 1948\" in their own smaller circles, and connect them with a line to the center circle. Tell students that you will add to the web during this activity as they learn more about this organization.
Play the video World Health Organization: Protecting health every day, everywhere.
After watching the video, have students recall details to add to the WHO web on the board.
Divide students into pairs and explain they will be designing posters to explain the purpose or work of the WHO.
Remind students that they may use symbols, pictures, and/or words on their posters. Encourage them to be creative as they work.
Remind students of the web on the board, and explain that they may want to use it as a resource as they work on their posters. Allow students to watch the video again to get ideas if they need some help getting started.
Circulate around the room as student pairs work to answer questions and provide assistance as needed.
Invite each pair to present their poster to the group. After they share their work, have them hang the poster around the room or on a bulletin board.
Wrap up the activity with the following discussion:
- What did you learn about the founding of the WHO? (Possible answers: It came about because of the founding of the United Nations and the need to improve health around the world.)
- Why is the WHO important? (Possible answers: It tries to keep people healthy around the world.)
