Ask students to name a country in the European Union. Write country names on the board as they are suggested. (Make sure the countries named are actually in the EU.)
After taking several suggestions, ask students how many countries are in the European Union. Tell students (or refer to the correct answer if a student mentioned it) that there are more than 25 countries in the European Union, also known as the EU.
Tell students that today they will be learning more and creating 1-minute presentations about the EU.
Project the map on the web page. Point to and name the countries in the EU. Point out that the countries in green are candidates that must meet certain criteria in order to join.
Divide students into pairs and have them go to a computer with internet access. Have students bring their pencils and index cards or paper so they can take notes and prepare their presentations.
Write the URL on the board or tell partners to conduct a Google search for “European Union cia.gov.” The first result will be for the web page. After all students have navigated to the correct web page, read the Introduction information aloud.
Then, ask pairs to choose a topic within 1 of the remaining sections (not an entire section). For example, rather than choosing all of Geography, they might share information about the sizes of the countries in the EU or their climates and resources. Ask students to look for a topic (or 2 related ones) with enough content for a 1-minute presentation.
Tell students to raise their hands when they have a topic they would like to work with. Write topics on the board as they are chosen to avoid repeats.
Explain that students may present the information they find on their topic in any appropriate way they choose. They may give an oral report; act out a skit; draw diagrams, charts, or other visuals; write a poem, song, or rap; etc. Remind them that, whatever form it takes, their presentation should be about 1 minute long.
Give students time to do their research and work on their presentations. Circulate around the room and provide assistance if needed.
Have pairs present their topics. Allow time for questions from other students about the topics, if possible.
If time allows, lead a discussion about the activity.a. What new information did you learn about the European Union?b. Why did you choose to present the information the way you did?c. What else would you like to learn about the EU?

Instead of pairs, have students work in small groups. If there are not many groups, have them cover an entire section rather than a topic within a section.

Have students write \"scavenger hunt” questions instead of creating presentations. Pairs can write 3-5 questions drawn from different sections and trade them with another pair to find the answers.
