15 minutes before the class or program, bring students together into a group.
Share with students that it’s a wonderful and important quality to recognize and notice kindness.
- Say to students: “When you see someone being kind, make sure to tell them you appreciate what they did. Letting others know when they do something nice helps them want to do more good deeds and reminds people to act with kindness more often.”
Ask students to reflect on the day and think of someone or something they saw that was an act of kindness. Give students a few seconds to think about it. Share that it can be a family member, a friend, a crossing guard, a shopping clerk, or a teacher. You can even ask the students for their ideas.
You may also share an example of your own to show what you mean. Have each student share with a neighbor what they saw. If it's helpful, assign students A and B.
- Give student A - 1 minute to share.
- Give student B - 1 minute to share.
After everyone has shared, ask students to write a note to the person they talked about to share why they thought it was kind. Ask them to include a sentence that thanks that person for being kind. Tell them to deliver it as soon as possible; if it’s a family member, they can go home that night. If it’s someone they see less often, have them wait until the next time they see them. If writing is not an option, they can draw a picture and then write ‘THANK YOU’ on it, promising to deliver it the following day.
You can share that these notes or drawings are like a present to someone- and who doesn't like getting presents? Share with students that saying thank you often is a way for them to be kind, and when they can recognize when others are doing kind things that’s a great time to say thank you-- as many times as they notice it.
*If a student displays interruptive behaviors, appears to be withdrawing/isolating multiple times, or seems to respond differently than usual to activities, acknowledge their feelings privately. If this is a recurring behavior or you have concerns with something you observe, it might be something to share with a supervisor.
If students deliver the note, ask them to be prepared to share the response in your next class with them.
