Street Banners

Gather students together. Ask students if they can recall interesting banners they’ve seen lately. Perhaps they’ve seen a banner for a festival or a banner at school.
Tell students that they will be designing banners. Their banners will contain either a short description of an important invention or an important quotation from a historical figure.
Divide students into groups of 3–5. Point out that the first step of the design process is to “Understand” your task.
Show students images of physical banners. They may know of virtual banners from video games. Ask them to notice lines, shapes, colors and composition. Ask them to consider balance and the type of lettering or fonts. Discuss characteristics of attractive banners.
Give groups a few minutes to answer the following questions and write down the answers.
- What invention or quotation would you like to use?
- What images would enhance this banner?
- Who is the specific audience for your banner?
- Where would your banner be placed?
After groups have solidified their understanding of the task, explain that now they will brainstorm ideas. Banners can be vertical or horizontal. Students can work as a group or independently.
When they are ready, have them sketch their ideas in as much detail and color as possible. They can work with partners or independently.
Circulate around the room, pointing out things you like about each banner. Praise choices, effort, and detail.
Put students in new randomly assigned pairs or combine two groups. They will evaluate banners and ask for feedback and advice. Remind them they do not have to take the advice. These are just suggestions for thinking about. They can choose to modify their banner later or not at all.
Remind those giving feedback to say what is good about each idea first and last and sandwich a constructive suggestion in the middle.
Conclude the session with a whole-group discussion.
