Model U.S. Government: The Work of Committees
Overview
In the school student council or similar body, new policies may be decided after a round of debate and then a vote. In the U.S. Congress and other real-life legislative bodies, however, enacting a new law involves a much more complicated process. In this activity, students will model the work of legislative committees. They will learn that these committees call witnesses to testify about the effects of the proposed law and that they may revise the proposed law extensively, and in some cases, stop the proposed law from ever being voted on by the whole legislative body.
