Conduct research about a planet.
Create a postcard containing common postcard features.
Use their research to create a personal, but fictitious, message.

For each pair:

1 computer station with internet access

For each student:

1 copy of postcard template (see attached PDF)
Crayons
Colored pencils
(Optional) Scrap paper for notes

Note: Since students will be working on both sides of the paper, markers are not recommended.

Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Make enough copies of the postcard template for each student to have at least one.

Planets for Kids

Ask students what they already know about the planets in the solar system (e.g., there are 8 planets, Jupiter has a red dot, Saturn has rings, Pluto is not a planet).
Tell students that today, they will be traveling to a planet in our solar system and sending a postcard home about their travels.
Show students the postcard template (see Preparation). Ask them to help you come up with a list of common postcard features. List the features on the board or chart paper, such as following:
- eye-catching picture
- photo caption
- short personal message
- addressee name
- address
- stamp
Provide students with a sample personal message for a postcard from a planet, such as: Dear Mom, I have made it safely to Jupiter! Jupiter is one of the gas planets in our solar system. Can you believe I am 483 million miles from our sun? It was sure interesting looking at the storms in the famous red dot as our ship drew closer and closer to it. Well, a day is only 10 hours long here, so I have to be heading to bed. See you in a couple weeks!
Divide students into pairs. Instruct them to take some time to review the Planets for Kids website (see Preparation) to find some interesting facts about planets. They may wish to jot a few facts down on scrap paper.
Next, distribute the postcard templates (see Preparation) and instruct each student to create a postcard from their chosen planet. Allow students to continue referencing the website, if necessary.
Have students include the following on their postcards (as discussed in step 3):
- Eye-catching illustration (front)
- Optional: caption
- Personal message that includes 2-3 facts about the planet they have chosen
- Addressee
- Address (just the town or city and state)
- Illustrated stamp from the “planet’s post office”
To conclude, allow students to present their postcards and share one interesting fact they used to create the postcard.
Consider compiling the postcards into a book.
