Ask students if it is easier to give instructions or to follow them. Have students discuss their answers.
Tell students that today, they will be practicing their speaking and listening skills.
Demonstrate the activity by inviting a volunteer to come forward. Allow the volunteer to draw on the board, or project their drawing.
Using the model drawing pdf, give the following directions to the volunteer:
- Draw a green 7 in the top left of the paper.
- On the right side of the paper, directly across from the 7, draw a small blue square.
- Draw an upside-down A in the middle of the paper.
- In the middle of the left edge of the paper, draw a red arrow that points to the right corner.
- In the bottom right-hand corner, draw the number 10 and underline it.
After completing the instructions, display the model drawing to the group and ask the listener to compare it to his or her drawing to check for accuracy.
Ask students to name direction words and write them on the board as a reference (e.g., top, bottom, left, right, diagonal, corner, edge, middle, under, above, inside, outside, around).
Distribute blank white paper to students and have them spread out across the room to create the drawings they will use to direct others to draw. Remind them to use a variety of symbols, locations, and colors, and that the drawings must be simple and kept secret from other students.
Have students fold their drawings.
Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Distribute 4–5 sheets of blank white copy paper to each student. Instruct each group to choose one student to be the speaker. Inform the other group members that they will be listeners and will draw what the speaker tells them to draw. When they finish, tell the listeners to check their drawings for accuracy against the speaker's.
Have students switch roles for the next round, until everyone in the group has had an opportunity to be the speaker.
To conclude, ask these additional questions about the activity:
- What was it like to be a listener?
- What was it like to be the speaker? Which role was harder?
- What did you learn about giving and following directions?
