Review lists and descriptions of college majors. Then print a list of majors from the websites below or other reputable sources. Make enough copies for either individual students or pairs.

Ask students to share what they know about how college coursework compares to courses in high school. Lead students to recognize that college students choose to focus on a major, which is a particular subject or course of study. Discuss how some college majors are familiar subjects from high school, such as math, English or other languages, and disciplines of science such as biology and chemistry. Other college majors are related to specific careers, such as nursing, engineering, and teaching.
Distribute copies of the lists of college majors. Review the general categories of the majors, and identify some specific examples.
Tell students that they will be researching a college major of their choice and then reporting their findings to the group. Students may work individually or in pairs. Work with students so that a variety of majors are chosen.
Provide questions to help students guide their research:
- What subjects do students study to graduate with this major?
- What personal skills or abilities help students succeed at this major?
- What jobs or careers does this major help students prepare for?
Circulate among the students as they conduct their research. Encourage students to pursue any questions they have about the college major they selected and to consult at least 2 different reference sources to find answers or additional information. Also, encourage students to take notes on the information they learn.
After about 20 minutes, reconvene the whole group. Invite individuals or pairs to stand before the group and share the information they learned. Allow the group to ask questions and discuss the college majors they researched, as time allows.
Lead a discussion of the activity. Pursue questions of interest to the group. Or ask these questions:
- Are you thinking about attending college? If so, what major appeals to you right now? (Discuss how many college students delay their decision about a major for at least 1 year and that changing majors is common.)
- What do you think are the important reasons for choosing a major?
- Should you choose the major that you find most worthwhile or interesting to study? Or should you choose a major that leads to a high-paying career that interests you?
- Many colleges offer only a small or limited set of majors, often in specific fields such as engineering or the humanities. Also, some colleges allow students to design their own major. When you consider which college to attend, how important to your decision is the set of majors that the college offers?

Instead of having students present their reports to the whole class, invite students to form groups of 3 or more. Then for 5 minutes have the groups share their findings with one another. Call time, have the students form new groups of 3 or more and repeat.
