Engage - 10 minutes
- Open Google Earth.
- Zoom into your city or town.
- Ask:
- Zoom out and then into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- Explore Rio de Janeiro by allowing students to zoom into various areas of the country. Ask students to describe what they see and how it is different, or similar to their home.
- Ask:
- Zoom out and then into New York City, United States.
- Explore New York City as you explored Rio de Janeiro.
- Ask:
- Share that most likely there is someone in New York City who listens to everything they suggested. Why? Because New York City is a city full of various cultures. It’s a city of many citizens that were born in other countries, or have parents and grandparents who were born in other countries. They bring their native culture, which includes music, with them. This creates a great opportunity for neighbors to share their music and create new combined versions, like the real-life story we’re about to learn about.
Explore I - 15 minutes
- Distribute Traveling from Brazil comic.
- Prompt students to skim the text and images.
- Ask students:
- Distribute Post-it notes - one per student.
- Prepare to play a piece of each song listed above. Try to cover the screen so students can hear, but not see the videos.
- Tell students that you will play three songs. One of those songs represents a style of music that was created by fusing the other two. Their goal is to identify the two original sounds and the fused sound.
- As students listen, they should guess which song matches the Bossa Nova by writing that song number on a Post-it note.
- Replay the songs as needed.
- Hang up the chart paper. Draw a horizontal and vertical line, forming a graph. Directly beneath the horizontal line, write the numbers 1 through 3 evenly across.
- Prompt students to place their Post-it note above the matching number. Post-it notes should form a column. See Diagram 1 for example.
- Tell students they created a bar chart with their guess. Ask students to describe the bar chart by asking:
Explore II - 10 minutes
- Play “Traveling from Brazil.”
- Ask:
- Say, “The characters in the comic story are based on real people. Joao Gilberto was originally from Brazil where they play and dance Samba. Stan Getz was living in New York City where he learned to play jazz. The two met, began playing together and created a new sound called Bossa Nova.”
- Play Section 2: “Traveling from Brazil.” This time have students think of a movement for each sound and repeat that movement as the sound is played.
Extend I - 20 minutes
- Pair students.
- Ask each student to think of their favorite song, share a few lyrics (remind students to share only program appropriate language) and create a rhythmic move to the song.
- Once each peer has shared, they must merge the lyrics and rhythmic moves to create something new.
- Have pairs share their creation.
Reflect - 5 minutes
- Play the same three songs from above.
- As they are played, have students move to the music.
- Prompt students to identify which is Samba, which is Jazz and which is Bossa Nova.
Outcomes to look for
- Students find similarities and differences between and among the three geographic outcomes.
- Students are able to read the bar chart.
- Students developed rhythmic movements which match the cadence of their favorite lyrics.
- Students merge two different songs and rhythmic movements to create something new.
