Prepare a few facts about the Northeast, such as these:

Of all the states in the Northeast, Pennsylvania was the first admitted to the United States; it was the second of all 50 states.
Maine and Massachusetts were once part of the same state.
The oldest state park in the country, Niagara Falls State Park, is located in upstate New York.

Ask students if they know what the states written on the board have in common. If they're not sure, tell them that these are the 9 states that make up the part of the United States known as the Northeast. Ask students what they know about the Northeast. If necessary, share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that in this activity, they will work in groups to research a state in the Northeast. Then they will create a tourism brochure about that state. Explain that a tourism brochure includes interesting facts about a state and is used to get people to visit or move there.
Divide students into small groups. Assign each group 1 of the northeastern states. Have them research the categories you wrote on the board. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events in the state's history? How did these events help make these states into what they are today? What historic sites can visitors see there?
- What are some large cities in the state? Why are they important to the country? What fun or interesting attractions do they offer?
- What rivers, lakes, and mountains are located in the state? What can people do at these rivers, lakes, and mountains?
- What are some major industries in the state? What places related to these industries can people visit?
- Which sports teams are from the state? Where can people see them play?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Demonstrate for students how to fold a sheet of construction paper into a traditional tri-fold brochure. Explain that they should create a brochure that includes pictures and text on all sides and parts.
Suggest that they draw their state on the front of the brochure. Then they can use the area between each fold on both sides to include different types of information, places to visit, etc. Give students a few minutes to plan their brochures.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the construction paper and other supplies to create their brochure.
Reconvene as a whole group. Have groups pass around their brochures for the other groups to read.
To wrap up, ask students to say what they liked about or learned from each group's brochure and discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- How are some of the states in the Northeast the same? How are they different?
- Which state or city in the Northeast do you think would be the most interesting place to live or visit? Why?
- If you do not live in the Northeast, how are the states there similar to and different from the state where you live?
