Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity. Gather all materials.

Visit the Britannica List of Nicknames of U.S. States, link below, to obtain the list of the 50 states and their nicknames. Print out 2 copies of the list. Leave 1 of the sheets intact to use for reference and the opening part of the activity, and cut the other apart to be distributed to each child.

Decide which states the children will be decorating. Each child will be assigned at least 1 state, and may take on additional states if time allows. Print out the maps (see link below) and write the name of the state in the blank space on the outside of each outline.

Clear off a large portion of a wall for the presentation of your United States map.

Gather all of the children in front of you, sitting on the floor. Tell them that you are going to do a quick activity called \"Where have you been?\" Read the names of some or all of the 50 states. Have the children stand if they have been to the state whose name has just been read.
Tell them that each state has a nickname. A state's nickname comes from or tells something unique about the state.
Tell children that today they will be decorating an outline map of 1 state with a picture related to its nickname.
Pass out a state outline and the state's nickname slip to each child. Make sure everyone understands what their state's nickname means or refers to.
Pass out pencils and coloring materials. Have children write the name of the state and its nickname somewhere on the state.
Ask children to draw a picture that they feel represents the state's nickname. The picture should fill up the entire state outline. Circulate around the room to provide help as needed while the children are decorating their states.
Pass out scissors and have the children carefully cut out their states.
Bring all the children back together and have them sit in front of the blank wall. Have each child come to the front and tell which state they had and give their state's nickname. Then have them explain the illustration they created to represent their state's nickname.
Referencing the United States map, have the children construct the United States using the states they decorated today. Start with the West Coast and work your way east. Use tape to hang each state in the approximate space where it belongs. Note that the states may not fit together perfectly, and you may not have all the states; this is OK.
Once you have built the United States, lead a discussion using the following questions:a. Which state nickname did you find to be the most interesting? Why?b. If you could visit any of the states we talked about today, which 1 would you visit and why?c. Why do you think it is important to learn about the 50 states?
