Prepare a few facts about the Midwest, such as these:

There is a Kansas City, Kansas, and a Kansas City, Missouri.
Popcorn is the official state snack food of Illinois.
Minnesota has 11,842 lakes.

Draw students' attention to the states written on the board. Ask what these states have in common. If students are not sure, tell them that these 12 states make up the part of the United States known as the Midwest. Ask students what they know about the Midwest. If they need help, share with them the facts you prepared.
Tell students that in this activity, they will work in groups to research a state in the Midwest and create a series of posters showing what they learned. Then they will hang up their posters, and the rest of the group will travel from station to station while they tell about the information on their posters, giving a virtual tour of the state.
Divide students into pairs or small groups. Assign each group 1 of the states in the Midwest.
Have groups research the categories you wrote on the board for their state. Prompt students with questions to help guide their research, such as these:
- What are some of the major events that happened in this state's history? How did these events help make the state into what it is today?
- What are some large cities in this state? Why are they important to the country? What kinds of things can visitors do there?
- What rivers, lakes, and mountains are located in this state? What kinds of things can visitors do if they visit these places?
- What are some major industries in this state? Have they changed over time?
- What are some sports teams from this state?
Circulate around the room, offering guidance as needed.
Pass out the art supplies. Have each group use the art paper and other supplies to make posters about different aspects of their state. Suggest that students draw the state on 1 of the posters, using the rest of the posters to draw different facts they learned, such as 1 or more famous landmarks people might visit, 1 or more major events in the state's history, etc.
Ask students to label each poster. They can add more text to their posters if they choose.
Have students tape their posters to the walls, making stations. Tell students that they will be giving a tour of their state through the posters. Have them decide what they will say about each one, and which group member will speak (everyone should get a turn).
Reconvene as a whole group. Have each group give a virtual tour of the state for the rest of the group, \"traveling\" from poster station to poster station. If time permits, allow questions.
To wrap up, encourage students to say what they liked about or learned from each other's posters and virtual tour. Discuss with students what they learned from this activity. Ask:a. How are some of the states in the Midwest the same? How are they different?b. Which state or city in the Midwest do you think would be the most interesting place to live or visit? Why?c. If you do not live in the Midwest, how are the states in the Midwest similar to and different from the state where you live?
