Read through and familiarize yourself with the entire activity.

Consider some service ideas to suggest and discuss with students, and if time allows, research their feasibility. Examples of service ideas:

Clean-up campaign for a park or neighborhood

Planting trees or a garden within the community

Tutoring service to assist middle school or high school students

Program to assist older adults or homebound residents with day-to-day tasks, such as shoveling steps or raking leaves

Ask students to discuss volunteer work they have participated in.
Tell students that they will develop ideas for a service program that is not currently provided in the community in this activity.
Lead a whole-group brainstorming session in which students think of ideas for a service project. Focus the session on services that fill the community's needs and not needs that are already well met. Write all ideas on the board, then circle or star the especially useful or feasible ideas.
Assist students in their brainstorming by providing specific ideas, such as those you identified before the activity.
Divide students into smaller groups, one for each of the circled or starred ideas written on the board. Encourage students to work on the idea that they think is most promising. Students may also research their idea online, such as examples of service projects in other communities or similar projects in their community.
Within each group, have students plan details for promoting and executing the idea. For example, students could create a poster, list community officials who might need to be contacted and suggest fundraising ideas.
After approximately 20 minutes:
- Have the whole group reconvene.
- Ask each small group to report on their developed ideas.
- If time allows, encourage the whole group to add to or build on the ideas presented by the smaller groups.
To wrap up, ask students what they learned from this activity. Ask:
- What was your experience like working within a group?
- What did you learn about your community that you did not know previously?
- Which groups within your community need help right now?
